8th September - Varenna/ Villa Monastero/ Mennagio

8th September - A little rainy 18 degrees
Today we caught the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna about a 10 minute journey.  It is a beautiful town with lots of narrow streets and lots of steep steps to walk up.  We walked up to Villa Monastero which originally was a converted convent, that was converted into a lovely villa.  The gardens were beautiful as you can see by the photos.  After visiting the Villa we made our way back along the top road and headed for Vesio Castle.  The walk up to the castle took about 30 minutes and was very slippery on the cobblestones.  Once we reached the top it was an amazing view of the lakes.  The castle was built around 1169 dc and has a large tower that we walked up with a small circular staircase. The castle also has an olive grove and an area where they keep birds of prey.  They have a huge great horned owl named Artu in a cage, he is only 1 of a few left in the world.  On our way back down to the town centre, it was a very steep walk and tom slipped over onto his bum!  We were glad to get back down, and just made the ferry back to Mennagio.  Mennagio is a small town on the other side of the lake from Varenna.  We didn’t arrive here until about 5pm so only had a quick look around.  We sat down at Hotel Central and ordered some drinks and down came the rain!!! and thunder it poured for about 10 minutes and all the roads were flooded.  We caught the car ferry back to Bellagio and  Mum had already cooked a big pot of Minestrone soup, so we had that for dinner with some toast.  After dinner we watched a dvd (My Left Foot) and all went to bed.
